Looking to put your house on the market or simply want to improve your home design? There are a few steps widely accepted by housing experts that can increase the value of your home. Whether it’s repainting the living room or ensuring that your home design features the hardwood flooring house hunters go crazy for, here are a few tips you can consider.
Where to start
When it comes to fixing up your house, HGTV suggests that homeowners take it one room at a time. Make a list of what you want to accomplish for each room design so that the process doesn’t get overwhelming. According to DIY Network, the first place to start is your living room, assessing the design to make sure the space is as bright as it can be. Experiment with window treatments and mirrors to move natural light throughout the area. However, it’s just as important that the living room - and every room in the house - isn’t too brightly lit and that a dimmer is used if necessary. Dimmers also add a dramatic element to the space that makes it more visually stimulating.
Flooring
As you can imagine, Shaw Floors recognizes the importance of having beautiful floors. And we’re not the only ones. Licensed realtor and interior design expert Matt Blashaw suggests installing engineered hardwood flooring throughout the house. He told DIY Network that people will notice cheap flooring easily, so high-quality flooring like Shaw hardwoods, carpets, and resilient luxury vinyl flooring can be essential to a classy, elegant home design.
The Kitchen
According to HGTV, the kitchen is where you should invest the most. Not only is it often where people entertain guests and where the family spends a lot of their time, but buyers tend to head straight for the kitchen.
It’s essential to remember that the overall appearance of your kitchen isn’t as important as the flow of the space. The room is a work space in addition to a gathering area. DIY Network recommended assessing your kitchen “triangle.” This is the space where your sink, dishwasher and cooking area meet.
Make sure there’s a flow within your triangle: Is your dishwasher too close to the sink? Are there stools or chairs interrupting the ease at which you can move from place to place? These are necessary questions to ask as you ensure the area is as effective as it can be. These are just three great places to start. If you were looking to put your house on the market, you may find the improvement so great that you no longer want to.
